Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge
The Durango-Silverton train is a great way to view some incredible mountain scenery and to relax at the same time. If you go during the summer, make sure you have a jacket with you. The elevation changes dramatically between Silverton and Durango and the elements can change too. Even if it is 100 degrees in Durango, you can find dramatically different temperatures in Silverton. Also be sure to wear eye protection, especially if you are riding in an open air car. It is a coal fired steam engine and the soot from the coal can get in your eyes if the wind blows just right! Make sure to bring eye protection for the kiddos too.
For the 2011 summer season (June 6 – August 11) people can ride the Train from Silverton to Durango and get a coach back to Silverton. You can ride any afternoon train from Silverton to Durango and as time allows, dine, shop, visit art galleries. The trains arrive in Durango at 5:15pm, 5:45, or 6:30pm. Then, the bus departs the Durango Depot at 7:15 (you must board 15 minutes before departure) and the bus arrives in Silverton at 8:45 pm. This bus has limited seating so book in advance.
Another idea for folks to enjoy the train and Ouray is to catch the train at the Rockwood Station. This station is about 20 miles north from the Main Station in Durango and allows folks to save time when driving in from Ouray and Silverton. The stretch of train tracks from the Durango station to the Rockwood Station parallels US Highway 550 but cars do travel faster on this stretch of road. In order to use this option, call for reservations at 888-872-4607 and indicate you want to start and end your trip at the Rockwood Station.
