Geology

san juan mountain range

For those interested in geology, Ouray County is an endless array of formations.  Mountains range from 7000 feet to over 14,000 feet.  The San Juans are the youngest mountains in the continental United States and therefore among the most rugged.  There are ice sculpted peaks and glacial valleys, volcanic riches, dramatic waterfalls, deep canyons, and numerous hot springs in the area.   Books on geology are available at our local bookstore, Buckskin Booksellers.

Local jeep tour companies also offer some insights into the geological history of the area.  If you want more of an in depth study, keep your eye on Western State College Extended Studies programs as they typically offer courses on the history and geology of the San Juan mountains in late June every year.  These courses are week long trips to the San Juan Triangle accompanied by two professors.
