Ouray Ice Park Sponsors Kids Climbing College

It is true. The snow fairies have been a little stingy so far this year.

Of course, just because the snow is less than the perfect fluffy cloud we prefer, there are still some fantastic adventures to be had in Ouray this winter, and temperatures have remained low enough for the Ouray Ice Park to flourish. Family getaways can be pretty exciting when you get to try something new, and there’s no better opportunity than the Kids Climbing College to introduce your family to the wonders of the ice!

Ice climbing is more than just a sport for the extreme enthusiast. The activity can be a wonderful way to spend time with family, and ice climbing does not have to be a death defying experience. In cooperation with the  Ouray Ice Park, guides from San Juan Mountain Guides hosts a free ice climbing clinic for young people, ages 7 to 17.

Kids are asked to wear warm clothes, gloves, a hat and winter boots or snow shoes, as well as an adult to fill out paperwork. Harnesses, helmets, boots, crampons, and ice tools are provided free of charge from San Juan Mountain Guides, as well as instruction from some of the best professional climbers in the country.

Within easy walking distance from designated Ice Park parking areas, the Kids Climbing Wall is a 40-foot high, 140-foot wide slab of ice located on top of the ice park with easy walking access. It features a dozen different routes with various levels of difficulty for all the kids. This event is first come, first served, and runs from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, February 3, 2017.

In Ouray, there is no better way to relax after an adventure in the Gorge than a nice long soak in our all natural hot springs. I can almost guarantee the whole family will sleep well at the end of the day!
